Day 6 of our hantavirus coverage. For the full scientific background on the virus, its transmission, and what kills it, read the anchor post in this series: Hantavirus: The Facts, Not the Fear.
As of today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that all 18 repatriated MV Hondius passengers remain under monitoring, with no new confirmed positive tests among the 16 being observed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The one confirmed Andes virus case in biocontainment continues to receive supportive care. No community transmission has been detected in the United States.
On the domestic front, the Illinois Winnebago County investigation has been closed with a determination of probable Sin Nombre exposure — linked to cleaning activity in a rural outbuilding. The IDPH is using the case as an opportunity to refresh its public guidance on rodent cleanup protocols ahead of peak summer activity season.
What We’ve Learned This Week
Six days of coverage distills to a few consistent points. The Andes strain from the cruise ship outbreak presents no meaningful community transmission risk in the United States. The domestic Sin Nombre strain is present year-round and peaks in late spring and early summer. The cleanup protocol that prevents infection is specific, well-documented by the CDC, and ignored by the majority of people who encounter rodent evidence in their homes. And the disinfectant you use during that cleanup matters — most common household products do not have verified kill claims against hantavirus-class pathogens. A plain-language guide to what works and what doesn’t: Does Hand Sanitizer Kill Hantavirus? The Honest Answer.
