Veterinary Ultrasound Biosecurity & Equipment Care Protocol

A Clinical Guide to Pathogen Control and Material Preservation

Engineering Standard: Validated for GE, Philips, Mindray, Siemens, and Sonosite Systems

THE CHALLENGE: BIOSECURITY VS. EQUIPMENT INTEGRITY

Standard "one-size-fits-all" hospital disinfectants often contain high concentrations of Alcohol or Bleach. While effective against some pathogens, these chemicals cause:

Lens Delamination: Dissolving the adhesives that hold the acoustic footprint together.

Housing Cracks: Brittling the specialized plastics of the probe handle and console.

Cable Failure: Drying out rubber coating, leading to interference and exposed wiring.

ROUTINE DISINFECTION (LOW-RISK PATIENTS)

REMOVE GEL: Immediately wipe all acoustic coupling gel from the transducer lens using a dry, lint-free cloth.

APPLY SONO WIPE: Use one SONO Disinfecting Wipe to thoroughly clean the transducer head, the first 12 inches of the cable, and any touched surfaces on the console (keyboard/touchscreen).

4-MINUTE CONTACT: The surface must remain visibly wet for 4 minutes to achieve full bactericidal and virucidal efficacy.

AIR DRY: Allow the equipment to air dry completely before the next exam.

HIGH-RISK PROTOCOL (PARVOVIRUS / CALICIVIRUS)

PRE-CLEAN: Remove all organic matter (hair, feces, heavy gel) from the probe and cable before disinfecting.

SATURATE: Wipe the entire transducer and cable with a fresh SONO Wipe. Use a second wipe if necessary to ensure the surface is heavily saturated.

THE 10-MINUTE RULE: To inactivate Canine Parvovirus, the surface MUST REMAIN WET FOR 10 MINUTES.

Note: If the solution begins to evaporate before 10 minutes, re-wipe to maintain saturation.

FINAL RINSE: After 10 minutes, wipe the transducer with a clean, water-dampened cloth to remove any concentrated residue.

CRITICAL "NEVER" LIST FOR VET TECHS

NEVER use 70% Isopropyl Alcohol on transducers; it leads to immediate rubber degradation.

NEVER use bleach-based wipes on lenses; they cause delamination and loss of image quality.

NEVER submerge the transducer connector (the plug) in any liquid.

NEVER use paper towels on delicate lenses; use only soft, medical-grade wipes.
